How to use this wiki library
You can use this wiki library to share knowledge, brainstorm ideas, collaborate with your team on a design, create an instruction guide, build an encyclopedia of knowledge, or just write down daily information in an easily accessible and modifiable format.

Editing pages
To edit this page, click on the Edit Page icon at the top of the page. To see all available commands, click on the Page tab. When you are editing, you can type text onto the page or insert tables and pictures. To stop editing, click the Save button at the top of the page. If you leave the page while editing, you will be prompted to save your changes.

Creating wiki links
You can link to another page in this wiki library by enclosing the name of the page in double brackets. When you type [[, the wiki will suggest page names that start with what you've typed. You can select one of these pages using the arrow keys or the mouse, or you can type in a new name. If you type in a new name, it will make a link to a page which has not yet been created. Links are finished by typing ]]. If you are linking to a page in a subfolder or an item in another list, you can press tab to add the selected suggested item to your link without closing the link.

You can link to many objects in SharePoint, not just pages. Here are some examples of links:
[[Dogs]] : A link to a page named Dogs in the same folder.
[[Animals/Dogs]] : A link to a page named Dogs in a subfolder called Animals.
[[List:Announcements/Welcome]] : A link to the item called Welcome in the Announcements list on this site.

To create a link to a page and have the link display different text than the page name, type a pipe character (|) after the page name, and then type the display text. For example, type [[Home|Home Page]] to create the link labeled Home Page that points to the page named Home.

To display double opening or closing brackets without making a link, type a backslash before the two brackets. For example, \[[ or \]].

Creating pages
There are two main ways to create a new page in your wiki library:

Create a link to a page which does not exist and then click on it to create the page:
This is the recommended way to create a page because it is easier for people to find the page when another page links to it. Links to pages that do not yet exist have a dashed underline.

Create a page that is not linked to any other:
In the Site Actions menu, click New Page. This will ask you for a name and then create that page in the current wiki library.

Managing your wiki library
You can manage the pages in your wiki library by clicking View All Pages on the Page tab of any page in the library.

Restoring a page
If you need to restore a previous version of a page, click Previous Versions in the Page tab at the top of the page. You can then click on any of the versions in the quick launch to view the page as it existed at that time. If you want to restore to a version, select it and click Restore this version in the toolbar.

Viewing incoming links
You can see which pages link to the current page by clicking Incoming Links at the top of the page. This will show you any pages which link to this page.

For more information about using Microsoft SharePoint Foundation-based wiki libraries, click Help on any Microsoft SharePoint Foundation page.

SharePoint 2010 includes features that support version control of items in lists and libraries. The SharePoint 2010 publishing features include additional user interfaces to make web content easier for page authors.

Version control allows content authors and approvers to track changes over time. Each list or library has its own settings and you can choose to track only major versions of items, track major versions and minor revisions, or turn of version control entirely.

When you use only major versions or no version control, everyone, including visitors to the site, will always see the current version of each item. A key benefit to using both major and minor versions is that you can configure SharePoint to serve the most recent major version to your visitors while showing the draft version to individuals that can edit or approve the item. This allows authors to make incremental changes to existing pages or create new pages without affecting public views until you are ready for everyone to see the completed, approved, version by publishing a major version.

Traffic Cop and Historian

SharePoint also uses versioning to support collaboration between authors. When you configure versioning on a list or library you will usually also choose to require check-out for editing items. This is the default setting for the pages library in the Publishing Portal.

When you require check-out, you specify that only a single person can modify an item at any one time. This prevents users from creating divergent versions with conflicting changes. As long as an item is checked-out by one user, no other user can edit the item until the user checks it in or until someone with sufficient privileges uses the undo-checkout operation to unlock the item.

It is also possible to allow a user to submit draft items but require approval from another user before a major version is published for consumption by all of a site’s visitors. Approval can be as simple as the click of a button, but it is often augmented by the approval workflow included in MOSS.

If you configure any level of version control, SharePoint will retain the old versions based on parameters you supply. You can limit the number of major versions as well as specify how many major versions for which you want to keep minor versions.

When either limit is reached, SharePoint discards the oldest versions. The publishing features include user interfaces that allow you to see the changes between two versions and it is possible to revert to any previous version at any time as long as SharePoint has not discarded the version.

Web Part Basics

Web Part Basics

A Web Part is a component you can add to a page. There are many types of Web Parts - an installation of SharePoint Server 2010 Enterprise contains dozens of them each of which performs a different function. Most of these Web Parts perform very specific functions and you will never have any reason to use them. However, there are many that you will use often.

You can add a Web Part to a page from the Insert tab of the Editing Tools ribbon. Doing so exands the ribbon to show the Web Parts available on your site. This image shows what you see if you insert a Web Part to a page in a Team Site on SharePoint Server 2010 Enterprise Edition. As you can see there are many categories.

As the image shows, you have the option of adding a Web Part for each of the lists and libraries in your site. However, those choices (Announcements, Shared Documents, etc) all add the same type of Web Part to the page. The Web Part is the ListView Web Part and it is a good example of just how configurable and flexible some Web Parts are. The ListView can display views from any type of list. You can connect it to other Web Parts as a source of data. For example, a Chart Web Part can display a chart of a ListViews contents.

You can also connect a ListView to another Web Part as a consumer of information. For example, the Query String (URL) Filter Web Part can connect to a ListView and pass a value from the URL to the ListView to filter the displayed data.

Most Web Parts are far simpler than ListView. For example, the Image Viewer Web Part simply displays a single image from a URL you provide.
